overview
Airport duty-free shopping presents a unique set of challenges for travelers navigating unfamiliar terminals while operating under strict schedules.
This case study focuses on design solutions aimed at helping duty-free shoppers confidently explore items by eliminating the friction and cognitive load traditionally associated with the airport retail environment.

// problem framing
how might we
Help duty-free shoppers to confidently explore duty-free items while minimizing uncertainty about time, finances, space and distance?

// the constraints of airport duty-free shopping
// Why I chose a Product → Shop flow
product Discovery → Shop Resolution
Traditional e-commerce applications utilize a product -> product details page. However keeping in mind the constraints of shopping at an airport terminal, I instead pivoted to a product -> shop [that stocks it] flow.
Since the user's primary objective while shopping is navigating, I directed users to the relevant shop while keeping the selected product pre-selected.
Users already know what they want while duty-free shopping, hence, displaying a product details page is redundant and doesn't add value to reduce the user's friction.

// what goes where
Info. Arch.

// home screen
designing the home
The home screen concerns with immediate orientation & finding shops stocking the relevant products.

// browsing products
committing to the shop
Upon selecting a product from the home screen, the user is redirected to the shop page with the product pre-selected.
// navigation
way-finding
The wayfinding screen concerns the user with reaching the shop while navigating the required levels.

// prior reservation
gate-pickups
The gate-pickup screen concerns the user with reserving a product for prior-pickups.
Conclusion
By prioritizing wayfinding and contextual certainty over standard retail structures, this design successfully mitigates the environmental and behavioral anxieties inherent to airport shopping.
Rather than isolating product pages, anchoring search results directly inside the retailer profiles immediately answers the user's primary question: "Where do I actually go to buy this?"
Ultimately, this approach successfully balances high-intent retail discovery with the hard realities of flight schedules, maximizing retail engagement without risking a missed flight.
